In a heartbreaking development for one of our community’s most dedicated nonprofits, the former executive director of Thrive in Southern New Mexico, Stephanie Hale, was arrested yesterday on multiple felony charges related to alleged fraud and embezzlement.

According to a release from the Alamogordo Police Department, the investigation began in late September and uncovered irregularities spanning from June 2023 to December 2024, with losses estimated to exceed $14,000. Hale, who led the organization for several years and was instrumental in its rebranding from the United Way of Otero County to keep more funds local, faces serious charges including four counts of third-degree felony fraudulent use of credit cards, along with additional fourth-degree felonies for fraud, forgery, and tampering with evidence.
It’s a tough blow for an organization that has long been a cornerstone of support in Otero and Lincoln Counties. Thrive doesn’t provide direct services itself but works tirelessly to fund and uplift the frontline nonprofits that do — the ones feeding hungry families, supporting our youth, caring for seniors, and addressing mental health needs right here at home. From annual fund drives to events like Koats for Kids and chili cook-offs, Thrive has helped harness our community’s generosity to make real differences in people’s lives.
Back in February, when internal checks first flagged potential issues, Thrive’s Board of Directors acted swiftly, commissioning an external forensic audit and turning findings over to authorities. Executive Board Member Matt Flotte emphasized in a statement that while the board and staff are deeply disappointed, they are strengthening financial controls and remain fully committed to the mission. “Operations continue as normal,” the statement noted, with a call for the community to keep supporting the vital work.
This situation reminds us all how much we rely on trust in our local nonprofits, especially ones like Thrive that help so many behind the scenes. The actions of one individual don’t erase years of good work or the ongoing needs in our community. As the legal process moves forward, Thrive is asking for continued understanding and support to ensure partner organizations can keep thriving — because when they do, all of Southern New Mexico does too.
