OHAJIILEE, N.M. — The community of Tohajiilee is breathing a sigh of relief today after a harrowing incident involving law enforcement. Two officers from the Navajo Nation Police Department are currently recovering in Albuquerque after an officer-involved shooting that briefly put the local community on lockdown.

The incident began around 11:50 a.m. when officers responded to reports of gunfire near the Navajo Housing Authority. The situation necessitated a temporary shelter-in-place order for residents as multiple agencies descended on the area to secure the scene.

President Nygren Issues Call for Prayer

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren released a statement confirming that while the officers were injured, they are currently in stable condition. He emphasized the bravery shown by those wearing the badge and the inherent dangers of the profession.

“I am grateful to hear that both officers are receiving care and are in stable condition,” President Nygren stated. “Our Navajo Nation police officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect our communities, and today’s incident is a reminder of the risks they face while serving our people.”

The President extended his gratitude to the inter-agency response team, which included the New Mexico State PoliceBernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI, among others.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public. A joint investigation is now underway, spearheaded by:

• Navajo Police Department

• FBI Albuquerque Field Office

• Navajo Nation Department of Criminal Investigation

President Nygren concluded his address with a somber request for the community: “I ask the Navajo Nation to keep these officers and their families in your thoughts and prayers as they recover. Our prayers are with them, their fellow officers, and the entire law enforcement community during this difficult time.”
