The New Mexico State Police is proud to announce that several of its officers have successfully completed the Advanced Human Factors for Force Investigations and Analysis certification course—an intensive and highly specialized 17-week training program focused on applying human factors science to police use of force analysis.
This advanced course provided officers with a robust foundation in understanding how cognitive, perceptual, and physiological factors impact human performance during high-stress incidents, such as officer-involved shootings or critical use-of-force encounters. The training emphasized how to find, interpret, and apply current scientific research to real-world police investigations and policy development.
The program began with a three-day in-person classroom session held in Santa Fe, after which officers transitioned to an online learning platform for the remainder of the 17 weeks. During this period, officers engaged in weekly assignments, case segment analyses, interactive discussion forums, and live webinars. The course concluded with a final three-day clinical practicum, during which participants applied their training.
To earn certification, officers were required to pass a rigorous final exam and complete a comprehensive practical assessment that demonstrated their ability to integrate theory with real-world investigative applications.
New Mexico State Police is the only agency in New Mexico with certified officers in this course. NMSP remains committed to evidence-based policing and ensuring the highest standards in use-of-force review and accountability.
