Alamogordo, NM — Otero County voters sent a clear message on June 2, 2026: Out with the establishment. In a pair of decisive upsets, change agents not part of the political machine scored historic victories, with transparency and ethical leadership emerging as the big winners on the ballot in both the Sheriff’s and County Commissioner races.

Commissioner District 2: Emery’s Narrow Victory Over Barela

With all precincts fully reporting, political newcomer and law-and-order advocate Jonathan T. Emery has defeated incumbent Amy A. Barela in the Republican primary for Otero County Commissioner District 2.

Final unofficial results from the New Mexico Secretary of State:

•  Jonathan T. Emery (R): 879 votes (51%)

•  Amy A. Barela (R): 834 votes (49%)

Total votes cast: 1,713

Emery, a retiring Otero County Sheriff’s lieutenant and military veteran, won by a margin of 45 votes (approximately 2.63%). His campaign focused on accountability, ethics, fiscal responsibility, and fresh perspectives outside the established political structure.

Barela, who also serves as New Mexico Republican Party Chair, faced intense statewide criticism and legal challenges for refusing to step down from her party leadership role while seeking re-election. The controversy highlighted broader concerns about conflicts of interest and establishment entrenchment within the GOP.

Recount Outlook: This county commissioner seat falls under New Mexico’s catch-all category with a 1% automatic recount threshold (roughly 17 votes). The 45-vote margin is well outside that range. A candidate-requested recount is possible within six days of official canvass, typically at the requester’s expense.

Historic Sheriff’s Victory: Martinez Brings Mandate for Change

Voters delivered an even stronger rebuke to the establishment in the Otero County Sheriff’s race, electing Geraldine Yazza Martinez in a commanding win that marks a historic mandate for ethical leadership and transparency and a historic first! 

Final unofficial results with all precincts reporting:

•  Geraldine Yazza Martinez (R): 54% — 2,818 votes

•  Raul Robles (R): 29% — 1,527 votes

•  Cesar James Ramos (R): 17% — 900 votes

Total votes: 5,245

Martinez, a lifelong Otero County resident, Mescalero Apache tribal member, and experienced law enforcement professional, is poised to become the county’s first female sheriff and first Native American sheriff. Her victory ousts establishment-aligned candidates and represents a clear voter demand for change outside the traditional machine.

In a humble and sincere Facebook video statement, Martinez expressed: “I’m grateful, I’m humbled and thankful…”

Broader Message: Voters Choose Change Over the Status Quo

These outcomes reflect a broader theme across Otero County: a rejection of entrenched establishment politics in favor of transparency, ethical governance, and leaders focused on serving the community rather than the machine. Both Emery and Martinez ran as outsiders emphasizing accountability and fresh direction.

The Republican primary victories position them as nominees for the November 2026 general election. Given Otero County’s strong Republican lean, both enter the fall as heavy favorites.
