Alamogordo — In recognition of VFW Post 7686’s recent sweep of several national awards, the 6ATKS Squadron at Holloman Air Force Base and newly retired Otero County Sheriff’s Deputy Jonathan Emery and his wife Renee have spearheaded a comprehensive renovation and restoration effort that has transformed the local veteran facility’s at local VFW Post 7686

The project represents more than $9,000 in materials and  hundreds of hours of services contributed by military and civilian volunteers, alongside hundreds of hours of labor coordinated through the Casa Motors-sponsored “Big Give” community initiative around the community. 

“This is about showing our veterans and our community that we care,” said Emery, who retired from the Otero County Sheriff’s Department yesterday. Working alongside his wife Renee, Emery partnered with the 6 ATKS Squadron to coordinate the massive undertaking.

National Recognition Inspires Local Action

VFW Post 7686, located at 700 Hwy 70 West, “earned multiple awards at the National VFW Convention across several categories this past week and is transforming into a vibrant more welcoming and inclusive post” mentioned post commander Ryan Nowaczk—recognition that also sparked the community partnership.

The “Big Give” initiative, supported by Casa Motors, brought together military families from Holloman Air Force Base with other local nonprofits including Love Inc. and Alamogordo MainStreet and others throughout the county to contribute to the effort.

Over several recent weekends, volunteers painted interior and exterior spaces, hung tarps and shade structures, installed lighting, placed flags and commemorative banners on walls, and conducted extensive cleanup operations at the post.

“It’s been a labor of love,” one volunteer noted. “The VFW does so much for our veterans and our community. This was our chance to give back.”

Community Partnership in Action

The project reflects a broader commitment by Holloman Air Force Base families and service members to invest in Alamogordo’s civic institutions. Military personnel worked alongside civilian volunteers in a coordinated effort that strengthened the bonds between the base and the surrounding community.

A recognition ceremony is planned to honor the contributions of all volunteers and partners. A vote is scheduled for Monday on measures related to the initiative
