Congressman Gabe Vasquez and former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, who is running for governor, attended a celebration at Patrons Hall this week to honor Mildred Gordan on the occasion of her 100th birthday—a milestone that reflects not only her remarkable longevity but also her decades of dedication to education and community service

The gathering also celebrated the Nagamine family, including Nalu and Koa, underscoring the event’s theme of honoring both vibrant elders and the younger generation who will carry forward the values of service and engagement. 

Joining the state and federal officials were several local leaders and candidates, including Alamogordo Mayor Sharon McDonald, City Commissioner Warren Robinson, and candidates Evan Lombard Ross, who is seeking the position of county commissioner. State legislative candidate Grace Nagamine was also present, with her twins being honored as part of the intergenerational celebration.

Gordan, a retired schoolteacher whose career spanned decades, embodies the commitment to education and community that her parents instilled in her from an early age. Those who know her recall an educator who believed that learning extended far beyond the classroom—that true education meant fostering engaged, thoughtful citizens invested in their communities.

“Mrs. Gordan represents the best of our community,” Vasquez said at the event. “Her life’s work in education and her ongoing commitment to civic engagement serve as an inspiration to all of us.”

Haaland, whose own record emphasizes public service and community connection, joined neighbors and friends in celebrating what organizers described as “a recognition of the critical role that our elders play in sustaining the values and wisdom our communities depend on.”

The celebration highlighted how intergenerational connection—bringing together celebrated centenarians with younger community members—strengthens the fabric of neighborhood life and reinforces shared commitment to education, service, and mutual support.
