CHAPARRAL, N.M. — The scent of sizzling beef will mix with the roar of the crowd this weekend as Chaparral hosts its third annual Burger Cook-off, a seven-hour celebration of food, wrestling, and music at Dolores Wright Park beginning at 3 p.m.

At stake for competing grill masters: a $500 grand prize and a one-of-a-kind ceramic burger trophy awarded to whoever is judged to have made the best burger in Chaparral. Entries will be scored on taste, presentation, and the cleanliness of each cooking station by a panel that includes professional chefs, managers from local restaurants, and a state representative.

Organizers say the rules are intentionally loose. Contestants can pile on whatever toppings and ingredients they like — the only requirement is that the finished dish still qualifies as a burger. The open format is meant to welcome home cooks and seasoned professionals alike, and registration remains open for anyone ready to fire up a grill.

The cook-off is only part of the draw. From 3 to 5 p.m., a Lucha Libre exhibition will bring the high-flying, acrobatic style of Mexican wrestling to the park, giving families two hours of masked mayhem before the music begins.

Once the wrestlers clear the ring, the stage belongs to local performers. The lineup features Mexican and regional music from artists including Miguel Hernandez El Interprete and Brisa Serrano, along with folklorico dancers and cheer teams from schools in Chaparral and El Paso. Food trucks, merchandise vendors, and a DJ will round out the festival atmosphere.

The night closes with a tribute to one of Mexico’s most beloved icons: Aron the Divo of El Paso will perform a musical homage to Juan Gabriel as the event’s grand finale.

Now in its third year, the cook-off has grown beyond a neighborhood gathering. Organizers note that attendees and contestants are expected from well outside the community, including Alamogordo — a sign, they say, that the event is becoming a regional destination.

The festivities kick off Saturday at 3 p.m. at Dolores Wright Park. Admission is family-friendly, and would-be burger champions are encouraged to register before the grills heat up.
