Alamogordo, NM — The City of Alamogordo has launched a community survey as part of its effort to update the city’s Comprehensive Plan, and Mayor Sharon McDonald is urging every resident to take part in shaping the document that will guide the community for years to come.

The Comprehensive Plan is Alamogordo’s long-range roadmap, guiding decisions on growth, housing, infrastructure, transportation, economic development, water resources, public spaces, and overall quality of life. The City is working alongside its staff and planning consultants to bring the plan up to date, and officials say resident input is the single most important ingredient.

For Mayor McDonald, the effort fulfills a promise made on the campaign trail.

“When I ran for mayor, one of my commitments was to help create a clear, long-term vision for Alamogordo,” McDonald said. “Shortly after taking office, I began meeting with the City Manager, City staff, and our planning consultants to move forward with an updated Comprehensive Plan.”

The mayor emphasized that the plan is more than a planning document — it is a source of stability for the city across changing administrations.

“A Comprehensive Plan serves as our community’s roadmap,” she said. “It also provides continuity. Elected officials and staff will change over time, but a community-developed plan gives the City a shared direction that can continue across administrations. It helps us make thoughtful and consistent decisions instead of starting over every few years.”

But McDonald was clear that the plan’s success depends on who holds the pen.

“Most importantly, this cannot simply be the Mayor’s plan, the Commission’s plan, or the consultant’s plan. It must be Alamogordo’s plan — and that means it must be shaped by you,” she said. “We want to hear from as many residents as possible, not only those who regularly attend meetings, but working families, students, seniors, veterans, business owners, parents, young people, and residents from every part of our city.”

The survey asks residents to weigh in on fundamental questions about the community’s direction: What do you love about Alamogordo? What needs to improve? What kind of community do you want Alamogordo to be in the years ahead?

“Your experiences, concerns, and ideas matter,” McDonald said. “The more people who participate, the stronger and more representative our plan will be. Let’s plan Alamogordo’s future together.”

If you want to attract new business and visitors to the area, the main street ( White Sands) needs to look nice. There is no need for all of the marijuana shops all over town and you must get rid of all the empty eye sores (buildings), etc. you must bring in better stores and most importantly you must work with the corporation that owns Christus Health hospital to bring in BETTER doctors. I understand that there’s a process but get your lawyers in there and work on that.

  2. Why did the Mayor at Large not mention a plan from the City Manager should be sourcable? Why does the City Commission not recognize the City Manager as the CEO of the business known as the City of Alamogordo likevthe City Chsrter does.l? Does she and the City Commission now dismiss the City Manager AND the City Charter both as trivial? I think so.

Like I have previously posted “the City Commission including the Commissioner known as the Mayor at Large are unlawfully being non-compliant with the City Charter and demeaning the importance of the City Manager in doing so.”

It has become so significant that this unlawful is now arrogant in that behavior that reflects so negatively on the people of the City.

It makes me wonder if this survey already has it objectives included in a hidden agenda?

  3. 1. Restore and comply with the City Charter inside City Hall.

    2. Revise the Contract for the City Manager to be independent from the City Commission in accordance with the City Charter. The City Manager runs the Business known as the City of Alamogordo. The City Commission does not.

    3. Encourage and support the City Manager to reorganize his Operations and to create at least 2 credentialed Engineering Management positions that can be hired young and be qualified to be City Manager’s in approximately 10 years from now

    4. Encourage yo City Manager to start up the Desalination Plant and use it to become a profitable business income center for our City as the County Seat for Otero County. Involve the Chamber of Commerce in this to expand in all of southern Nuevo America.

    1. Complete the survey so your voice actually counts as these comments won’t be part of the official record unless you do the link in the news article

      1. I will do so thank you for the encouragement.
