ALAMOGORDO — The Alamogordo Police Department has arrested five juvenile males following an armed robbery and breaking and entering incident that occurred Saturday morning, May 16, 2026, in the 1100 block of Puerto Rico Avenue.

According to APD, officers responded to the scene during the morning hours and quickly determined that the five suspects had forced their way into a residence, held the homeowner at gunpoint, and made off with a firearm and body armor before fleeing in a vehicle.

Officers wasted no time. Responding units located the suspect vehicle and took all five juveniles into custody shortly after the incident. The suspects ranged in age from 14 to 17 years old — two 17-year-olds, two 16-year-olds, and one 14-year-old. Both the stolen firearm and a second firearm believed to have been used during the robbery were recovered at the time of arrest.

One 16-year-old male faces the most serious charges stemming from the investigation, including Aggravated Robbery (a second-degree felony), two counts of Larceny including Larceny of a Firearm, three Conspiracy counts, and a misdemeanor charge of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Person Under 19.

The four remaining juveniles were each charged with three counts of Conspiracy, three counts of Accessory, and one count of Tampering with Evidence.

One 17-year-old and one 16-year-old were detained following the investigation. The remaining three juveniles were released to their guardians — a decision driven not by the nature of the charges, but by a shortage of available beds across New Mexico’s four statewide juvenile detention facilities.

The Alamogordo Police Department continues to investigate the incident. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact APD.

I think it should go without saying that this is why juveniles are being used in gangs. They won’t face prison, won’t go into a juvenile detention center either. Back with guardians, who’s guarding the guardians? This story puts the lie to all the gaslighting that recently erupted on Facebook when I made comments about unemployed youth having no other options than to become criminals, and being groomed by caretakers with poor values.
