ALAMOGORDO, N.M. — A 22-year-old Alamogordo man has been arrested and charged with first-degree child abuse after a 1-year-old boy was taken to a hospital with injuries police described as suspicious.
Officers with the Alamogordo Police Department were called to Christus Health Southern New Mexico on Sept. 26 in reference to the child’s injuries, the department said in a news release Tuesday. The boy was transported to University Medical Center because of his injuries.
Police said their investigation identified Joseph Vazquez as the suspect. He is charged with abuse of a child resulting in great bodily harm, a first-degree felony, and was booked into the Otero County Detention Center pending a court appearance.
The department did not release details about the child’s condition, the nature of the injuries, or Vazquez’s relationship to the child.
Police are asking anyone with additional information to come forward. Detectives can be reached at 575-439-4300.
A criminal charge is an accusation. Vazquez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
